PW140 - Tutorial 21, Chapter 3 - Northwest Wales Sunset

Today we complete our free photoshop video tutorial showing how we turned that badly exposed RAW file into a bright, colourful and interesting seascape. In this show we do some dodging and burning using a bitmap layer and then we use a curves layer with overlay blending mode to darken the corners as a vignette. Finally we use a neat technique for adding a lens flare to the image without the filter making a destructive edit.

In today's show we show you how to use the lightroom adjustment brush and graduated filters to boost contrast and colour and add a sunset glow on the horizon. We then move over into Photoshop for the rest of our tutorial where we begin with some dust spot removal with the spot healing brush tool to deal with lens and sensor dust. Then we use a curves adjustment layer and paint on its layer mask to boost the oranges in our horizon glow.

In this episode I use colour balance and graduated filters to add the colour toning and some sky darkening. I also bring back detail in the very light and dark regions by using the fill light and recovery sliders.

Discover the Dragan effect by viewing Andrzej Dragan's amazing portraits if you're not familiar with his style. This is a 3 part free video tutorial and this section lays the ground work with getting the light and detail levels right using dodging and burning layers with soft light, hard light and a wacom pen and touch tablet so that the later, draganizing layers will look right. We also perform some basic colour correction using a curves layer.
