Tutorial 12, Chapter 3 - Singer Island Sunrise

This week we do some more brush work on beefing up the colours in our photograph and improve the structure of the picture by strengthening the leading lines. We also pre-announce our upcoming competition and show off last week's entries to the Creativity Exercise assignment. And boy oh boy what a lot of pictures that was!

Starting a new tutorial and getting back in the saddle for the new year. This week we look at another collection of images and talk about how I chose the target image in Adobe Bridge then open and export it in Adobe Camera Raw. We also talk about Leading Lines in our composition segment, Martin Bailey's competition and a couple of new podcasts.

Tutorial 11, Chapter 4 - Wheelbarrow

A little late but this week we look at vanishing points in our composition segment and then work on our wheelbarrow image to reproduce the same look as we did before using LAB but this time using RGB and non destructive layers. In depth coverage of layer groups, levels and curves with a smattering of B&W conversion.

Tutorial 11, Chapter 2 - Wheelbarrow

Today we look at some new concepts that I've not covered before, namely colour modes and channels. Then I start messing around with some of the ways LAB colour mode can help us to improve our images. Also this week we look at repetition in our composition segment and there's news of the next Tips From The Top Floor Photography Workshop in Germany next May where I'll once again be co-hosting with Chris Marquardt.

Tutorial 10, Chapter 3 - Mow Cop Castle

This week we start with a new section on composition and then complete our colour image with a final dodge/burn layer and work on the three dimensionality of the castle. Next we convert the colour version to black and white with a channel mixer. And finally we add a tritone gradient to make our sepia toned version.

Tutorial 10, Chapter 2 - Mow Cop Castle

Tutorial 2 basically finishes the colour version of the Mow Cop Castle image and makes ready for the sepia duo-toned version. We cover some work on adding contrast and punch by darkening and masking and then do some dodging and burning and add a vignette. Plus all the usual explanation of why I'm doing what I'm doing.

The start of a new month sees the start of a new tutorial. This time I'll show you how to produce two very different images from a single source. This attractive landmark is local to me and much photographed. I was particularly drawn to the line in the ground and the clouds and how they both led to my subject. It was a beautiful day and I was lucky with the light which did nearly all the work for me.

Tutorial 9, Chapter 5 - Gun

Sorry it's a little late. I'm covering for someone who's off sick in my day-job at the moment so time is tight. But we got 'er done at last. This is the final episode of Michelle's Gun image and this week we add the little skulls that are hidden in the picture here and there. There are a couple of interesting applications of brushes and blending modes used there. And just for kicks I take a moment to show you layer comps as well.

Tutorial 9, Chapter 4 - Gun

I'm back from my week away and feeling great. Today we embark upon layer blending options and layer effects when we add the text layers to Michelle's image. A variety of interesting uses of blending modes and layer masks add lots of techniques to this show and once more I run longer than I intended. Someday I'm going to have to learn the tender art of editing. Or possibly just how to shut up.

Tutorial 9, Chapter 3 - Gun

Ok I know I promised to keep the show length down but I had so much competitiony goodness to tell you about this week that I kinda over-ran my 30 minutes again. Sorry! But on the bright side this week you get the chance to win a ColorVision Spyder 2 PRO in our first ever PhotoWalkthrough Challenge! The topic of the challenge is "Colour" and all you have to do to win is take a photo inspired by that topic, upload it to Flickr and tag it with "pwchallenge1".

Tutorial 9, Chapter 2 - Gun

It's another monster of a show. This week I over-ran to 33 minutes. Sorry about that - I'll try and keep it under 30 minutes in future. Lots of good stuff in there, though. Today I talk about brushes, especially how to load brush sets and modify your own brushes to get the effect you want. We use those brushes on Michelle's Gun image to add "grunge". I also take the time to go back over some more selection techniques that I missed out last week. Turns out I could easily do an hour just on making selections alone!

Tutorial 9, Chapter 1 - Gun

Well it's the longest, hardest show I've ever produced but at last it's here. This was a monster, taking over 7 hours from beginning of planning to the end of uploading. Today I start looking at Michelle's Gun image and we begin by looking at the many ways to make selections and how you can save and load those selections and then use them for selectively lens blurring your images.

Tutorial 8, Chapter 4 - Flower Triptych

Today we have the final chapter in the Flower Triptych tutorial. Slightly shorter than usual but packed with goodness. Today we duplicate images, modify our gradient maps, paste our three images into a single document, play around with smart objects and finally print our images. Hope you enjoy it.

Tutorial 8, Chapter 3 - Flower Triptych

Part 3 of our Flower Triptych tutorial sees us finish the first of our three flowers by examining our image, creating a plan and then executing it. We do some selective darkening, add some contrast and selective lightening as well as selective sharpening and we remove a small colour cast.

24 hours later than planned but this week we see the start of another new tutorial. This time I've chosen a bright colourful image inspired by Andy Warhols iconic Marilyn Monroe image. Perfect for the hot summer we're having here in the UK. This show covers how to examine the brightness values in your image and how to apply a colour altering gradient map.
